The result

The Giants and Commanders tied 27-27 in Landover. Neither team scored in overtime. The Giants are 3-1-1, Washington 1-3-1.

Washington led 27-13 with 11:05 left after Daniels's second touchdown run. Winston then hit Isaiah Likely and Malik Nabers for two 17-yard touchdowns, the second with 1:43 left.

Overtime was a mess. Dominic Zvada missed his third field goal of the game. Daron Payne stripped Cam Skattebo with the Giants in range to win. Then, with 12 seconds left at the Giants' 24 and no timeouts, Daniels held the ball on a called pass and went down for no gain. The clock ran out before Washington could kick.

Dan Quinn took it on himself. “The sequencing of that does not fall on (Daniels),” he said. “That has to come from me.”

The big miss: Winston's pick

We said the risk in Jameis Winston shows up at least once. It never showed. He threw 54 passes, completed 33 for 326 yards and three touchdowns, and threw no interceptions. Washington's defense had no interceptions at all.

He did give the ball up once, on a lost fumble. That is not what we called. The call was an interception, and it is a miss.

Giants coach John Harbaugh on his quarterback: “I thought he was amazing in the fourth quarter, I thought he was amazing in the second half.” Washington's coordinator warned us about exactly this in the preview: the four or five touchdowns. He got three.

Push: the pick

We picked Washington to win. It didn't lose either. A tie is a push under the rule we wrote before the game, so that is what it is.

We will not hide behind it. We were with the line at Washington by 4, and the line was wrong too: the Giants got four points and needed none. Washington was 12 seconds and a kick away from a win, and it let a 14-point fourth-quarter lead go.

Hit: Daniels runs for 40

This one cleared the bar more than twice. Daniels ran 9 times for 103 yards and scored from 38 and 26 yards out. He also went 17 of 25 for 199 yards. The brace we called the risk did not slow his legs.

Washington ran for 202 yards as a team. Jacory Croskey-Merritt added 82, including a 33-yard touchdown on the opening drive.

Hit: Washington gives it away once, at most

The Giants came in with eight takeaways in four games. They got none. Washington threw no interceptions and lost no fumbles. Dyami Brown fumbled once and Washington recovered it.

Washington won the turnover battle 2-0 and still did not win the game.

The case against us

The preview said Washington's defense gives up 30.5 points a game. It gave up 27 to an offense we called 26th in the league. The Giants had 408 yards, 29 first downs and the ball for 39:25, and went 3 for 3 in the red zone.

The preview's last line said the Giants would have to win the turnover battle. They lost it 2-0 and still tied. The part of the case against us that mattered was the defense, not the ball.

What we are changing

This is the second week in a row the case against us named a leaky defense and none of our reasons made a call on it. Reason 3 answered the Giants' takeaways instead, and it hit while the defense gave up 27. From now on, when the case against us names more than one weakness, the reason that answers it goes after the one we would bet decides the game, and we say which one we picked.
